Updated 28 February - Flying with a Spitfire

Sunday, February 28, 2010   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Without further delay, here's the update for tonight.

Amongst the many emails that I receive through this site, one question returns particularly frequently: "How can I arrange for a flight in a Spitfire?". I've always been thinking that it would be fantastic to be able to direct those who ask to something that would meet the expectations, even though conducting passenger-carrying flights in a Spitfire is obviously bound with enormous obstacles.

Tonight I'm glad to present a comprehensive answer to the question about Spitfire flights, including a unique offering from an UK-based company who are trying to raise to the challenge in the best possible way, Actions Stations! in Kent. I've been in contact with them for many months now and feel that their personal Fly With a Spitfire experience can be wholeheartedly recommended. For 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, this could be your aviation experience of a lifetime.

Updated 8 February - Dogfighting in the backyard

Monday, February 08, 2010   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Technology issues kept me busy during the weekend, see more about it at the bottom of this post. In a meantime, there are two new videos for today.
  • A Truly Emotional Start-up is a video clip from the film "Perfect Lady", which covers full restoration story of ML407, a two-seater Sptifire TR MK. IX also known as the Grace Spitfire.

  • The World's Worst Special Effects Movie? falls definitely into amateur category, but all the Airfix dogfighting in the backyard made me feel like I was back in the 1960s. Check it yourself.

Inspired by the forthcoming demise of FTP Blogger, one of key components in this site's inner workings, I have already started looking for alternatives. An obvious candidate for replacing Blogger is Wordpress, another well-known blog tool and publishing platform. I have set up a test installation at one of my other sites to evaluate it. If you care to take a look you will be able to see how much progress I've done so far. Also, rather than boring everyone here with further technical talk, I'm blogging my progress there. A short summary so far is that Wordpress looks promising, and, more importantly, easy enough.

Updated 27 January - Decoding the "E" wing

Wednesday, January 27, 2010   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Tonight I present another one of these articles which started out as a photo, then became photo with a caption, then got expanded to a short writeup with two photos. Then the writeup prompted some reference checks. IN the process, other findings were made which were worth adding to the text... and so the story went on until, after a few days, the initial picture became a fully-fledged feature.

Updated 14 January - Safe Returns

Thursday, January 14, 2010   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Part of my work on Spitfire history is roaming various archives for interesting primary source material. It is surprising to see that there's something interesting to be found on the Spitfire in almost any major international archive, be it the State Library of Victoria, Birmingham City Archive, or, as in the case of one of today's updates, the Royal Danish Library. In these days when increasingly more archive searches can be performed directly on the web, research is only becoming more fun!

  • New pair of images have been added in Historic Photographs section. The first today is Skagen Ind, a Danish presentation Spitfire Mk. VB.

  • "On a flat piece of ground..." is another new photo discovery from Australia, but one that brings more questions than answers. Experts on Spitfire operations on that continent are requested for more information.

  • Polish contributor Radek Jurczyk makes his premiere apperance today in our Art & Memorabilia gallery. This one is entitled "Safe Return".

Friday, January 08, 2010   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Another small update for today, while I'm catching up with my email:
  • Two new additions have been made in our Art & Memorabilia gallery. Vladimir Urbanek presents The Great Siblings, his newest work which in a playful and sympathetic way encompasses the Britishness of the Spitfire!

  • Another brand-new piece for the new year comes from Herman Veltorp of the Netherlands. "Come and Get Me" - which makes you almost feel the strain of the maximum climb.

Updated 14 December - Search!

Monday, December 14, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Tonight I update the site with some new functions, plus two articles.
  • Firstly, I have made a change in the navigation menu to the left. The Spitfire Site News section has been renamed to What's New - a title which, I believe, better reflects the very purpose of this blog! This is only a name change, the contents remain the same.

  • Secondly, I have added a new function to the menu: Search This Site. As the name implies, this is our very own search function, allowing you to search throughout this site and discussion forums. Its usefulness should become apparent if you consider that the Spitfire Site now counts over 1,000 individual web pages! The search box is provided by Google, and I was positively surprised by its performance. Give it a try.

  • In Reviews, we have two new 1/48 decal sheets, both from Lifelike Decals of Japan. Read my review of Lifelike Decals sheet - Supermarine Spitfire Mk. XVIe Part 1.

  • The second review for today is, expectedly, of a follow-up product - Lifelike Decals' Supermarine Spitfire Mk. XVIe Part 2. Both sheets are welcome additions for the 1/48 ICM Spitfire Mk. XVI kit.

Updated 8 December - Decal reviews

Tuesday, December 08, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Tonight's update is all about decal reviews. I have received many interesting decal sheets for the Spitfire recently, and will review all of them in due course. Tonight we review four different sheets; more reviews are to follow in the near future.
  • The first new addition in our Review section is Xtradecal Supermarine Spitfire PR Mk. XIX. Magnus Fridsell founds it to be an essential addition to the new 1/72 Airfix kit.

  • Iliad Design of Canada provided us with three sheets from their product line. Oddball Spitfires is an option for those looking for unusual marking options for a Spitfire.

  • In the third review today, I examine Iliad Design's Pre -War Spitfires - a welcome complement to the 1/48 Airfix kit.

  • Iliad Design is also the publisher of Silver Spitfires - the last sheet reviewed today, which offers options to model a Spitfire in striking silver finish.

Updated 3 December

Thursday, December 03, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Today we have a sizeable update, covering a rather wide spectrum of subjects:

...in the meantime, James May's Toy Stories series and its message to promote traditional, old fashioned toys such as Airfix, Meccano, Lego or toy trains, has been well received in the UK. I you have missed the show, you can watch all episodes, including the Airfix one, online at the BBC site (a feature regrettably restricted to UK visitors only). Also, the show has now its own site jamesmaystoystories.com, which promises a book and a DVD to be issued soon.

Enjoy.

Updated 23 November - New Airfix Spitfire IX

Monday, November 23, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Without further delay, here's the update for today:

Talking about the Airfix Spitfire kit, its role in the history of recent generations has been nicely brought to light in the recent BBC show lead by Top Gear celebrity James May. In a bid to demonstrate that old toys such as Meccano, Airfix and Lego are still relevant, May gets a class of schoolchildren to help him build the biggest Airfix Spitfire ever, a whopping 1:1 scale plastic kit!

James May's Toy Stories were aired on Tuesday 27 October. Having been in Cosford a week later, I have seen the actual model, and can witness that the children involved did a remarkable job - and in only three days. I will be posting more pictures of it shortly.

Updated 18 November - Hobby Link Japan

Wednesday, November 18, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Today I'm excited to reveal a new advertiser here at the Spitfire Site - Hobby Link Japan, or hlj.com.

Started in 1995 by Scott T. Hards, Hobby Link Japan (HLJ in short) is an Internet mail-order business located in Japan which ships modelling hobby products to customers all over the world. Scott is an American who became involved in the hobby industry while living in Japan. I remember myself how back in the times of rec.models.scale, Scott got tired of people outside of Japan asking him to send kits because they were not available overseas, or priced at absurd levels. So in 1995, he started a business to do just that. Since then, HobbyLink Japan has grown steadily, and expanded its catalog offerings to include many items from Europe, North America and around Asia. As of 2009, HLJ has a full-time staff of 35 people and ranks as one of the major hobby mail order suppliers on the Internet.

With all the buzz around Tamiya's new 1/32 Spitfire, I'm very glad to have HLJ onboard.

Please take a moment to welcome them, especially considering that their Holiday Countdown Sale (hint: PCM Spitfires) is on right now. Now, let's continue with the today's update, which just happens to have been created by the HLJ crew.
  • New addition in Videos is a video presentation of Tamiya's new 1/32 Spitfire Mk.IX kit filmed during its first public presentation at the Tokyo Hobby Show in October 2009. This 6-minute clip contains a walkthough of the kit's main features and an interesting interview with its chief designer Katsumi Tokunaga.

Updated 15 November - Telford show report

Sunday, November 15, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Without further delay, here's the promised report from Scale Modelworld in Telford, and more! In fact, after organising the material from my recent trip I realized that updates for the remainder of this month will probably be dominated by modelling subjects - mostly reviews of Spitfire kits, accessories etc. which are proliferating right now! The first one - that of AZ Models new 1/72 Spitfire kit - is included in this update.
  • Tonight I'm pleased to present the full Photo Report from PMS UK Scale Modelworld 2009. It is an extensive 6-part feature from this prime modelling event, featuring many of the aircraft models in the competition area. The 400+ photos have been organized in slide shows for convenient viewing.

  • I have also spotted a beautiful scratchbuilt Hawker Tempest model at the show, a creation which fully deserves separate attention - see the Fabulous Tempest!

  • A new colour profile in the Camouflage and Markings section is that of a Spitfire predecessor - Supermarine Type 224. Submitted and described by Graham Ward.

  • We also have an addition to our Art & Memorabilia gallery: Lethal Dance, a new airbrushed piece by Herman Veltorp.

  • Last but not least, a review of a new line of 1/72 Spitfire kits from the Czech Republic. AZ Models 1/72 Spitfire Mk. I, examined by Magnus Fridsell.

Here at the computer, I'm leaving a number of submissions in the pipeline, please excuse me if these will have to wait until next week...

Updated 30 October - Last moments of W/C

Friday, October 30, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Two updates have been posted today.

  • Remeber the last week's video of an NitroPlanes RC Spitfire ARF kit that didn't want to fly properly? It left me anxious to see if and how the airframe could be fixed (shearing off the radiator... taping over the wheel wells... wondering what Joe Smith of Supermarine would say about that :). Today I'm glad to say that the second part of this video, including all the answers, has been posted on YouTube. I have inserted it at the bottom of the original article, so have a look: A Spitfire that didn't fly so well, now a two-part documentary feature!

That's all for this week; October has been a very good month in terms of updates with many sigificant new articles added to the site. Next week, I'll be preparing for departure to Telford for the IPMS UK Scale Modelworld show. I know I'll meet many of you - the readers and contributors - there, and I'm looking forward to it! Should you wish to make any particular arrangement, my email address is at the very bottom of this page.

Tamiya 1/32 Spitfire Mk. IXC - Review

Tuesday, October 20, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Tonight I put my best face forward as a reviewer and take a detailed look at Tamiya's brand-new 1/32 scale Spitfire Mk. IXC. This plastic kit will become generally available in November, but I'm pleased to get ahead of the events thanks to Tamiya's public presentation of their market-ready kit at the recent Plamodel Hobby Show in Tokyo on October 8-11.

The review consists of three sections in which we walk through the kit's engineering, optional parts, detail, clear parts and marking options. This makes it by a margin the largest and most detailed product review I have written to date, but I believe that the significance of Tamiya's new kit for the modelling community makes the effort worthwile. On a personal note, I have been working on the scale drawings of the very same Spitfire variant for quite some time, which brought additional fun comparing the results of Tamiya's research with mine.

I hope that you will enjoy the review and find a few comments from old Spitfire nut useful.

The excellent kit images in this review have been promptly provided by Dave Johnson from New Zealand (thanks, Dave!).

Updated 16 October - Swift to battle

Friday, October 16, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Without further delay, here's the update for today.

Lastly, an off-topic item which I couldn't resist. Throughout aviation history there were only a few aircraft designs that produced instantly recognizable silhouettes in the sky. The Spitfire was - and is - one of them, but one aircraft which had an even more unique shape is the PBY Catalina, an American contemporary to the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Here is a recent photo from Duxford which I found irresistable - PBY was a personality.

Wednesday, October 14, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

I'm working hard to clear the editorial to-do list and turn more of the candidate articles lagging on my computer into new pages of this site. Another update for this week is:

  • Australian Debut is a new article in the History section, bringin some new light onto Spitfire's long and difficult deployment to Australia. By Peter Malone.

  • We also have two new Photo Galleries. The first one shows a unique Royal British Legion Spitfire Replica - a remarkable full-size Spitfire replica built specifically to allow everyone to have a seat in the cockpit!

  • Goodwood Revival is a traditional festival of historic motorsport, but the 2008 also had an impressive "air component". See the Goodwood Revival 2008 beautifully captured by Bill M.

Updated 4 July - New section

Saturday, July 04, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

To all our US visitors: Happy Fourth of July.

Today I have added an entirely new section: Gift Ideas. During the two years since starting this site, I have been receiving many emails from wives and girlfriends to aviation enthusiasts asking for various tips for a birthday or Christmas present that would put a smile on the face of their nearest and dearest.

While I've gladly responded to most such inquiries and will continue to do so to the best of my ability, I have also decided to put up a page with a few hints. Through partnership with Delphic Designs, specialists in technical illustration as fine art inspired by the great engineers of the past such as Brunel, R.J. Mitchell, and W. Boeing, we can now gladly recommend the first set of fine Spitfire-related products for your consideration. Or why don't you treat yourself and make a statement by carrying a state-of-the art Spitfire T-shirt or having a Spitfire coffee mug in your den or office.

Updated 2 July - Salerno and Pegasus

Thursday, July 02, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Just prior to the summer holiday break and with remaining work commitments only barely manageable, the editorial work ad this site is still running at low gear. However, I have managed to add two new images in Historic Photographs.
  • Friendly fire is a rather well-known photo of an American Spitfire which force-landed at the beaches of Salerno. Full story follows.

  • There is a general opinion is that RAF and commonwealth aircraft were rather below par with regard to personal markings, but there certainly were many exceptions contradicting the rule. The Australian pilot Jack Newton and his personal Pegasus emblem is the subject of our second photograph for today.

Saturday, June 20, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Due to the excessive workload during last two weeks, I had to limit the updates on this site to the bare minimum. So today, only one but hopefully interesting item which once again demonstrates how lasting and far-reaching is the influence of the Spitfire in today's culture.

One more photograph has been added today.

  • "Spitfires can take it" is an image originating from HMSO publications of the time, interesting because it shows typical effects of a belly landing in a Spitfire.

Thursday, June 04, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Another mostly-modelling update has been posted online today.

  • A new addition in Scale Modelling is a pair of Spitfire models presented by Czech modeller Jiří Fiala - in the article entitled President's Spitfire.

  • Also, with regard to the recently posted book review of Spitfire Girls. In response to my review, I have received a letter from Carol Gould, the author of the book. This has now been added at the end of the original article.

  • I have also been contacted by Black Robin Resinz and updated the pricing information in yesterday's review of their 1/48 Spitfire Mk. XII Conversion Set.

Updated 25 May - 100th item in Historic Photographs

Monday, May 25, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Today we have two new additions in the Historic Photographs collection. I'm glad to announce that with this update the number of items in the collection now exceeds 100 archive photos - all carefully described and, to the best of our ability and resources, checked for provenance. Accumulated, this collection represents a solid amount of work, and I'm already looking forward to the next hundred - the pipeline is already full of interesting candidates!

The historic photographs have also prompted lively activity on the part of our readers in form of online commentary. Simply put, whatever is missing in my research on these photos seems to be quickly added by someone else. A perfect example of this is the recently added image of Spitfire Mk. Vc in Sicily, for which we now have a wealth of additional detail including the serial number!

I'd like to use this opportunity and direct a warm thank you for all contributions; please keep this good work going. To further encourage it, I have just introduced a new category in the collection: mystery photos, containing all images for which we're seeking further information.

Now on to today's additions.
  • The hundredth posting in out collection is, fittingly, a photograph which to my knowledge hasn't previously been published. The last Spitfire from Exeter shows a curiously dressed Spitfire hauled from a repair workshop in this city. An intriguing photo which raises many questions.

  • Also in this update is Seafire's combat debut - an evidence of the Seafire's first operational use during Operation Torch.

  • Lastly, as mentioned above, check our previous mystery photos and see if you can help laying down the puzzles!

Updated 22 May - Rolf Arne Berg

Friday, May 22, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

After a short but stressful break caused by malfunction of my blog's posting functionality, We're returning today with another update.
  • A new addition in Camouflage and Markings is the article written with the indispensable help of Bjørnar Norås and Nils Mathisrud from Norway. A Question of Foreign Markings tells the full story behind one of the most unusual markings to be seen on a Spitfire in the closing months of World War II - PV181 of the Norwegian ace W/Cdr Rolf Arne Berg.

  • We have also an interesting, if unusual new addition in our Art & Memorabilia gallery. Mecha Spitfire is one of those attractive Japanese toy-robot-anime-comic mashups. Have a look.

Updated 11 May - Spitfire marks

Monday, May 11, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Today we have an important update. It can be argued that no Spitfire site should be left without the description of the many versions of this remarkable aircraft. Indeed, my objective set from the very beginning has been to provide the complete reference to all Spitfire and Seafire versions. However, I have been hesitating to simply put together a listing of these - as can be found on other websites - preferring to provide a more in-depth overview if and when available. Today, thanks to the excellent contribution by Jeff Webb, I'm glad to present the first step towards fulfilling this goal - a concise guide to single-stage Merlin-powered versions of the Spitfire. This, of course, becomes a part of the Variants & Technology section.
  • Supermarine Spitfire Variants - Single-Stage Merlin-Powered  is the title of this two-part illustrated guide which goes through all marks of the first line of Spitfire development, from the Mk. I to Mk. VI fighter variants, and from the Mk. I PR Type A to PR Mk. XIII photo-reconnaissance versions. By Jeff Webb, illustrated by various archive photographs.
Enjoy.

Updated 30 April - The short life of a Spitfire pilot

Thursday, April 30, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Today we have a significant new addition to the History and Operations section.

Readers may remember last year's news story about Scottish Spitfire pilot Russell Lyon who was killed over France during World War II and whose crash site and grave were discovered only recently. Thanks to the effort of Mr. Richard Lyon, the pilot's nephew, we can now present a full story about Russell's career as a combat pilot and that fateful day of 27th July 1944.

Tuesday, April 28, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Here's an example of what Yours Truly is working on today. Rivet counting - literally! This fragment of the lower view of the Mk. IX illustrates well the progress I've made with my Spitfire drawings so far. I'm deeply into adding rivet lines, screws, bolts and other minor detail. The lower wing view alone consist now of over 1,000 drawing objects. Phew!

In the meantime, enjoy this small update for today.
  • A new video clip brought to the Video Section is Sunset flying in Omaka; a much-anticipated appearance of the the newly restored Spitfire Mk. IX PV270 in the markings of Al Deere.

Monday, April 27, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Two new Historic Photographs have been added to the collection tonight.

  • First is the image of V-1 defender - the famous Spitfire Mk. XIV flown by Sqn/Ldr Richard Newbery.

  • The second image comes with a request for more information. A rather ordinarily looking photo from a RAF airbase shows the handover ceremony upon USAAF arrival in Britain. We're looking for the name of the place and maybe some additional information about the circumstances.

Updated 18 April - Internet meeting

Saturday, April 18, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Once again I'm updating the site from a cafe in the city - a rather odd but enjoyable experience and with all the mobility available to net users today, rather easy. However, the daily routine is rather different: I'm not a cafe-going blogger. Work on this site is usually confined to my study at home during late evenings. Leisurely visits to coffee shops are not a part of my daily routine, and besides, most of the updates require access to reference material - both on the Internet and from my bookshelf.

Tonight's addition gets me back to a pleasant meeting which occurred two weeks ago during a local modelling contest, which traditionally is a gathering place not only for modellers but also aviation enthusiasts of all sorts. There I met Mr. Tomasz Hajzler who arrived for the show from Poland and, as it turned out, sought to meet me during the event. Brought to the contest area were two of his models in 1/32 scale, including a Spitfire Mk. IX in the desert camouflage which is our subject for today.

Tomasz turned out to be a Spitfire fan as much as he is an avid modeller. I was surprised to learn that he got to know my name through this site and appreciated some of the material posted so far, including my review of the Monforton book which, as I understand, he put to good use during the construction of his model. We spent an hour talking about Spitfires, models, the site and all sorts of things. A most pleasurable experience. Tomasz allowed me to photograph his model with the aim of displaying it at these pages. So here it is, a memory of a valuable meeting and an excellent example of the modelling art. Nice meeting you, Tomasz!

Tuesday, April 14, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

I hope that everyone had a really great Easter holiday. Mine has been really good, coupled with another journey - this time half business, half pleasure - to the city of Krakow. A highlight of this trip, besides strolling around at the enchanting streets of the local Old Town, has been a visit to Poland's best aviation museum located at the outskirts of the city - with its very own Spitfire Mk. XVI but also many other unique "Easter eggs" worth discovering, including the Messerschmitt Me 209 record aircraft, Ernst Udet's personal Curtiss Hawk dive bomber or the collection of unique World War I biplanes. I hope to write more about this visit in a separate post in the near future. In the meantime, here is the photo update for today.

Updated 24 March - Invitation to the cockpit

Tuesday, March 24, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

I'm glad to publish today an article which remained "in the works" for several months. A long-planned pictorial guide to the Spitfire cockpit. Initiated last Autumn, this material has quickly grown no no less than 80 photos, each to be accompanied by a detailed description. With the amount of work required there have been both delays and a few research-related frustrations on the way. Now that everything has been completed, I'm posting it online with a degree of satisfaction and a conviction that it is a better, more in-depth piece of reference to the cockpit of the Spitfire than anything you could find elsewhere on the web. Enjoy.

  • New in the Variants & Technology section is the Anatomy of the Spitfire Cockpit - a visual guide providing (hopefully) everything you wanted to know about the cockpit of the Spitfire and the layout and operation of its various controls. Spitfire Mk. Vb BL628 is used as demonstration aircraft.

Updated 23 March - More large-scale Spitfire modelling

Monday, March 23, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

The popularity of the recently posted article on J P Cousinet's fantastic 1/3 scale Spitfire replica came as a pleasant surprise. The article alone has attracted over 10,000 views and was linked from many discussion forums and sites across the web. Today we spin on the same theme - three video clips showing some really impressive large-scale modelling projects. All added in the Video Section.

  • The same 1/3 Spitfire model is now featured in a video presentation submitted by the modeller J P Cousinet of France.

  • How about a working Merlin engine in 1/5 scale? This one was engineered in metal by Barry Hares from the UK. See the live demonstration in this video.

  • 1/4 Scale Spitfire Sound System for That Merlin Growl. A common problem in R/C modelling is that the sound of the small engine cannot match the song of the full-scale original. See (and hear) the solution to this problem in the form of onboard sound system for the Merlin. Impressive!

Tuesday, March 10, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Tonight's addition in the Scale Modelling section is rather special. I know that we have shown many wonderful Spitfire models on these pages, but arguably nothing quite as extraordinary as this - a 1/3 scale scratchbuilt Spitfire model, crafted in metal and accurate down to every nut and bolt. This work of art by French modeller Mr. Jean Pierre Cousinet must truly be seen to be believed!

Updated 9 March - BoB Luftwaffe photos

Monday, March 09, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Here are two new additions for today. I'm glad to see that after a period of rather irregular updates, I've managed to bring back some regularity to my editorial work. Therefore I also hope to clear some of the larger items pending publication soon.

Another editorial news is the arrival of my new drawing software. As mentioned previously, I intend to refresh my long-neglected computer graphics skills and try to produce some colour profiles of the Spitfire on my own, improving on the first effort published here. The package, Corel Draw X4, arrived in my mail last week. After some ten years of inactivity in the graphics field, the big question was which graphics software to select for this project. The choice was very much between only two options, Adobe Illustrator CS4 and Corel, both coupled with rather substantial outlay. I have evaluated voth and although many people say that the professionals prefer Adobe, Corel Draw still feels as familiar and straightforward as the last time when I used it. I hope that the learning curve is not not too steep as to prevent me from producing something useful in the foreseeable future. Wish me luck!

Monday, February 16, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

This is my 200th post in the Spitfire Site news. I can't believe this has come around so quickly. Better still, two hundred blog posts lead the way to over 500 other web pages that were added to this site since the beginning. Although there is seemingly no end to how much more material can still be added, I consider that the Spitfire Site has reached a degree of maturity. Thanks so much for visiting, leaving comments, forum posts and for the encouragement and support that you offer me.

Updated 10 February - Spitfire Women

Tuesday, February 10, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Tonight we have a book review, and an important book it is. I just finished reading my copy and can verify that Giles Whittell's Spitfire Women of World War II is a well-written and moving account of a little-known but important story of women in service with the ATA. It really isn't a book about the Spitfire or even aviation; more importantly, it is a book about women who flew Britain's best aircraft of the time and their troubled collective journey towards recognition for what they were doing. For this reason I can see no better review of this book than one written by a woman. Enjoy.

Updated 30 January - JE-J

Friday, January 30, 2009   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Today we have another article in the Camouflage & Markings section.

I must admit that after posting the previous addition in the series, I wasn't overly happy with the accuracy of the artwork included - a colour profile of Johnnie Johnson's famous JE-J, Spitfire Mk. IX EN398 sourced from public domain.

Judging from the visitors' statistics of this site, colour profile drawings are much sought after. Sadly, from the editorial perspective it remains a fact of life that quality profile artwork is hard to come by, not to mention the accurate one. Unfortunately, even the colour profiles published in quality books and magazines often seem to be the product of rather mechanic copying and pasting than thorough research on individual aircraft.

For quite some time I have been asking myself whether I should be starting producing my own colour profiles or not. After the JE-J article and the comments I received on our discussion forums, I decided to give it a try and embark on a steep learning curve of profile drawing. So today's is the premiere day for my first effort, still much in need of improvement in terms of artistic value - but, hopefully at least, a much better rendition of Johnson's famous Spitfire.

I hope you'll like it.

Updated 15 December - Presentation Spitfires

Tuesday, December 16, 2008   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Yesterday I have added another entry in the History Articles section.
  • Presentation Spitfires. The popularity of Spitfire Funds resulted in the proliferation of aircraft funded by the public, each adorned with a name chosen by its donor. It is a vast and only recently documented subject, presented here in the article by Ray Sturtivant and Henry Boot, previously published in D.C.O., the magazine of the Spitfire Society and republished here with kind permission of Ray Sturtivant's family.

A sad news which became known to me during my inquiry about this article is that Ray Sturtivant, a prolific aviation historian and book author, passed away on 9 August 2008 at the age of 82. He was perhaps best known for his meticulous research into the RAF and FAA history. Among his books are the milestone The Squadrons of the Fleet Air Arm, Spitfire International and his last book, Gifts of War: Spitfires and other Presentation Aircraft in Two World Wars, for which the today's article is a prelude. Ray and his work will be greatly missed.

Updated 8 December - New old photos

Tuesday, December 09, 2008   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Today we have a healthy addition of new images in the Historic Photographs section. Four new fully-described photos bring the total number of images in this collection to 76.

  • Sqn/Ldr Donald Osborne Finlay was a pre-war athlete and Olympic medalist who became a Spitfire pilot and a commander of No. 41 Squadron in the early war period.

  • "Observer Corps", one of the many presentation Spitfires, was Finlay's personal mount in Hornchurch in the winter of 1940/1941. This is also the first Mk. II in our gallery.

  • Balkan Air Force shows a row of Spitfires Mk. Vc of No. 352 (Yugoslav) Squadron RAF in their national markings.

  • Lastly, here is a photo of the long-lived BM316, a Spitfire Mk. Vb, an aircraft with a long career and service record with the RAF, RNZAF, RCAF and USAAF.

And, as a final note for today, modellers of all kinds may find it interesting to see just how much can be done with the old trusty 1/72 Airfix Hurricane - in this article by John Wong at Hyperscale.
